Every public school in West Virginia was closed Monday due to a teacher strike, and it looks like most them will be closed Tuesday, too.

The teachers are demanding a raise — in 2016, West Virginia ranked 48th for average teacher salary nationwide — and better benefits.

Gov. Jim Justice offered the teachers a small pay increase, but the teachers said the legislation wasn't enough and didn't address any of their other concerns.

And the strike doesn't appear to be legal. The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports strikers could be suspended, fired, temporarily barred from teaching or even jailed.
