Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says North Korea should look to Vietnam as an example of what happens when you work with the U.S.

Pompeo made the statement at a dinner for Vietnamese and U.S. business leaders Sunday. He told the group Vietnam's economic growth is proof that the U.S. keeps its promises — possibly a reference to President Trump's promise to improve North Korea's economy.

The U.S. and Vietnam normalized relations in 1995, about 20 years after the end of the Vietnam War. Since then, the Council on Foreign Relations says, the two countries have grown closer economically and strategically.

Pompeo left North Korea on Saturday after two days of talks on denuclearization. Pompeo said those talks were productive and brushed aside comments by North Korean officials that the U.S. had a "gangster-like mindset."
