"Witnesses reported two to four shots were fired. One of the officers was hit in the face. There's a heavy police presence. ... Our partners at the Post-Dispatch are emphasizing that the shots did not come from demonstrators," KTVI reports.

Both officers have reportedly been taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The violence comes just after the Department of Justice released a scathing indictment of the Ferguson Police Department.

A series of resignations followed, including Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson, on Wednesday.
