WXYZ reports police were called to the scene when a passerby contacted them after looking inside the garbage bags and finding human remains inside, including a head and a torso.

St. Clair County's sheriff told WBOC witnesses saw a white or gray 1990s SUV dumping what they thought was trash from the vehicle and onto the road.

According to the Detroit Free Press, authorities are looking for a middle-aged woman who they believe is responsible for the grisly incident.

WXMI notes it's unclear how long the remains had been in the bags or if they belonged to multiple people. But St. Clair investigators have labeled this case a homicide and are working to determine exactly what happened.

The stretch of highway where the bags were found was closed off until about 10 p.m. Thursday but is now reopened. Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact them immediately.
