U.S. President Donald Trump announced the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday. And leaders from around the world were quick to condemn the move.

Some of the reactions were subdued. British Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement she disagrees with the move because it is "unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region."

Other leaders had a tougher response. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia called the decision "unjustified and irresponsible."

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed "great anxiety" over the White House announcement.

And even before the decision was official, Pope Francis said he couldn't keep quiet about his "deep worry" about the situation.

The move could create major problems for the region. Newsy previously reported it could lead to violence and potentially end any hope of negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.
