The U.S. is proposing more tariffs on Chinese goods — this round worth roughly $300 billion.

The U.S. Trade Representative's Office formally submitted a proposal for the 25% tariffs on Monday "at the direction of the President."

This is just the first step to putting this round of tariffs in place. The proposed duty would affect thousands of Chinese products, including several different types of cheeses, fruits and vegetables, clothing and electronics.

The new tariff proposal is open for public comment until June 17, at which point, there will be a public hearing where people will be able to ask the appropriate committee about the tariffs.

This is just part of the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China. Last week, the U.S. boosted tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods. China responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs on $60 billion worth of American products, including fabrics, clothing, plastics and medical equipment.

The two countries have been trying to negotiate a new trade deal for months, but they've since stalled. It's not clear when, or if, trade talks will continue.
