Fact-Checking Trump's Claim That Democrats Are Anti-Border Security

President Donald Trump recently claimed Democrats are anti-border security. That's too broad a statement.

As part of his midterms campaign tour, President Donald Trump has been hitting a lot of the hot-button issues — immigration among the most inflammatory. At a campaign rally in Wisconsin, he said this:

"Democrats oppose any effort to secure our border."

That's a really broad brush. And it gives an inaccurate impression that all Democrats are opposed to border security. That's not the case.

Democrats in both the House and the Senate have supported measures to reinforce fencing along the southern border with Mexico, bolster border patrol and fund technological surveillance.

Generally, Democrats have opposed the president's proposed border wall. A few Democrats in red states have voiced support. The majority of the party being against the border wall doesn't mean they're against border security altogether.

But many analysts would agree more liberal candidates entering the arena this election year have pulled the party further to the left. That includes on immigration. Take, for instance, calls to abolish ICE earlier this year. But it's still not accurate to say the Democratic Party is wholly against securing the border.
