Toronto officials want to ban the sale of handguns within the city.
Earlier this week, Toronto's city council voted overwhelmingly in favor of urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's administration to do just that. It's also going to ask the provincial government to ban the sale of handgun ammunition.
The vote came after a gunman opened fire in the city's Greektown neighborhood Sunday night, killing two people. The suspected shooter later died.
After the shooting, Toronto Mayor John Tory said in a speech to the council, "Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?"
Gun violence is growing in Toronto. Police reported that as of Monday, 29 people have been shot and killed this year, compared to 17 gun deaths at the same time last year.
