PEREZ: “We are a country of immigrants. And the thing is is that our history classes, our Social Studies classes do not reflect that.”
With the retirement of Barbara Walters and then ABC parting ways with McCarthy and Shepherd, Whoopi Goldberg is the lone holdover for a show going through a slew of changes.
Along with the return of Rosie O’Donnell to round out the four-member panel, The View is getting a new executive producer, a new logo unveiled just two weeks ago and a new studio where ABC's building the show a new set.
Wallace said in ABC’s press release she was “honored to join the tradition of compelling conversations that has been the signature of ‘The View.’"
The former White House communications director for George W. Bush had been rumored as a leading candidate for the panel for weeks.
But Perez seemingly came out of nowhere to join the show.
She wrote, “Knowing that I'll be in the company of Whoopi, Rosie and Nicolle, three very smart and engaging women that I have an immense amount of respect for, makes it even more unbelievable.”
Variety points out more behind-the-scenes reasons for the choices, "The 'View' producers spearheading the makeover were known to have sought a prominent Latino presence as well as a conservative perspective, in order to ensure a lively debate on topical issues."
And as The Wrap notes, such major changes could be critical for the talk show. Ratings are down, and "The View" is seeing serious competition for the first time in years...
