The European Union wants to go "climate neutral" by 2050. On Wednesday, its executive branch proposed cutting the bloc's greenhouse gas emissions to "net zero" using tactics that will remove carbon from the air.

The EU's climate chief said this is a response to a recent U.N. report warning of climate change's deadly consequences, which he called a "real wake-up call."

That report says global temperatures will likely rise to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels between 2030 and 2052 if global warming continues the way it is now.

The EU's ambitious proposal comes days before a climate summit in Poland.
