Today, students across the U.S. are walking out of their schools and demanding stricter gun laws.

The National School Walkout started on the East Coast at 10 a.m. local time. The walkouts will continue across the country at 10 a.m. in each time zone.

Students will stay outside for 17 minutes — each minute representing a life lost in the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, last month.

The protests are intended to pressure Congress to ban assault weapons, expand background checks and take other steps to curb gun violence.
