So you want to legally purchase a gun. How does it work?

First, you fill out a form at the store. Then, your information is checked against FBI and state criminal records. 

Those state records don't always include info about mental health, though. 

If someone sells a gun privately, background checks aren't required. 

And only some states require private sellers to be licensed.
