A consumer privacy group has filed a challenge to Facebook's $5 billion settlement with the FTC over what the group alleges to be years of violations by the tech giant.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center, or EPIC, filed the challenge in Washington, D.C., Friday, asking a federal district court to intervene in final approval of the settlement. The FTC approved the settlement in a 3-2 vote.

EPIC says the deal would erase more than 26,000 existing consumer complaints against Facebook that are still in review at the FTC.

The deal is expected to include new privacy oversight and transparency requirements for Facebook.

EPIC filed a complaint against Facebook in 2009 regarding privacy violations.
