The 2018 Winter Olympics officially got underway in South Korea on Friday.

And it didn't take long before things got a little awkward between the U.S. and North Korea.

According to several reports, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence only stayed a few minutes at a reception dinner hosted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in ahead of the opening ceremony.

He reportedly was avoiding an encounter with North Korea's ceremonial head of state.

But, during the opening ceremony, Moon was photographed shaking hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's sister.

Moon seems to want to use the Olympics as a way to improve relations with North Korea. Pence, however, pledged to tell "the truth about North Korea" at every opportunity. No official meetings are scheduled between members of the U.S. and North Korean delegations.
