North Korea Just Fired Its First Ballistic Missile In Months

The launch comes days before a joint air force drill between the U.S. and South Korea.

North Korea reportedly fired a new ballistic missile on Tuesday.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile flew eastward from South Pyongan Province, and Japanese officials say it landed within the waters that make up Japan's "exclusive economic zone." Officials say South Korean and U.S. authorities are now analyzing the details of the launch.

The missile launch comes days before a joint air force drill between South Korea and the U.S. The drill, scheduled to begin Dec. 4, will involve 12,000 U.S. personnel and about 230 warfare airplanes.

News outlets speculated North Korea was preparing a missile test ahead of the drills. The country's last missile launch was in September.
