The U.S. and China have agreed to return to the negotiating table for yet another round of trade talks.

China's commerce ministry said in a statement Thursday the two sides will hold high-level discussions in Washington in early October.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reportedly spoke about the planned negotiations during a phone call Thursday.

But some analysts wonder if a breakthrough is possible, considering how much the ongoing trade war between the two countries has escalated.

Last week, the U.S. started imposing 15% tariffs on a wide variety of Chinese goods, from firearms to apparel to electronics. And China slapped new duties on American crude oil.

And earlier this week, China said it filed a complaint against the U.S. with the World Trade Organization over tariffs.
