Five U.S. Marines who went missing after a midair collision last week have been declared dead. A fighter jet and a refueling plane collided about 200 miles off the coast of Japan.

Officials announced Monday they had ended the search and rescue effort for the missing service members.

U.S., Japanese and Australian forces spent more than 800 hours in the air and on the water searching for the Marines, covering more than 35,000 square miles of ocean.

The planes were reportedly conducting regularly scheduled training at the time of the crash.

Two of the seven crew members who were on board the planes that collided were found alive, but one later died after being rescued.
