On Thursday, President Donald Trump formally nominated Kelly Craft, the current U.S. ambassador to Canada, to be the next ambassador to the United Nations.
The president unofficially announced his intention to nominate Craft for the position in February. The previous U.N. ambassador, Nikki Haley, resigned late last year.
Craft's nomination will now move to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. She'll meet with lawmakers before heading to a confirmation hearing, which doesn't have a set date yet.
President Trump's former nominee for this position, Heather Nauert, dropped out of consideration after it was widely reported that she'd employed a nanny who was not allowed to work in the U.S.
Some outlets speculate that President Trump will take away some of the power previously wielded by the U.N. ambassador by removing the position from his Cabinet.
