Jason Aldean Picks Perfect Song To Pay Tributes On 'SNL'

The country star's cover of "I Won't Back Down" paid two tributes at the same time.

Country star Jason Aldean paid two tributes with one song in a performance on "Saturday Night Live," dedicating a cover of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" to the victims of the Las Vegas shooting.

Roughly a week earlier, Aldean had been on stage at a country music festival in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire from a hotel room. At least 58 people were killed and hundreds were injured in that attack.

"SNL" marked Aldean's first public performance since the shooting. He canceled multiple shows on his tour out of respect for the victims.

Aldean's song choice Saturday night was also a nod to Petty. The legendary rock star died the day after the Las Vegas shooting.

Before performing "I Won't Back Down," Aldean told the audience and viewers: "You can be sure that we're going to walk through these tough times together, every step of the way. Because when America is at its best, our bond and our spirit — it's unbreakable."
