France's Yellow Vest protests continued on Saturday with renewed vigor; attendance grew after a seeming slowdown over the holidays.

In the eighth consecutive weekend of protests, violence was still an issue in major cities. Protesters in Paris smashed their way into a government ministry using construction vehicles, leading to the evacuation of a government spokesman.

In a tweet on Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron decried the violence and those who would "attack the republic" and called for "debate and dialogue."

An estimated 50,000 people protested across the country — more than previous weeks but still less than peak numbers in November. So far, 10 deaths have been linked with the protests.
