Former New York Attorney General York Eric Schneiderman won't face criminal charges over allegations of assault and abuse from four women.

Schneiderman resigned in May after the claims were made public in a New Yorker article.

Soon after, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed special prosecutor Madeline Singas to investigate the claims.

Singas told CNN she believed the women, but that "legal impediments, including statutes of limitations, preclude criminal prosecution."

The women accused Schneiderman of slapping them, choking them and threatening to kill them if they broke up with him.

Schneiderman said in a statement Thursday that he recognizes Singas' decision to not prosecute him does not mean he's been exonerated. He said he accepts full responsibility for his conduct.
