El Salvador has cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan to become allies with China, further escalating diplomatic tensions.

The move comes after Taiwan says it repeatedly ignored El Salvador's request for funding to build a port.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said the country intends to fight "China's increasingly out-of-control international behavior."

China's foreign minister says this shows his country's One China policy follows international norms.

El Salvador is the third country to break relations with Taiwan in the past few months. Currently, only 17 countries recognize Taiwan.
