The Democratic Party announced an early convention in 2020, a sign party leaders anticipate a large primary field. CNN first reported the announcement.

The Democratic National Convention will be July 13-16. That's even before the 2020 Summer Olympics, which is seen as a break — or a distraction — from the political process.

A number of high-profile Democrats are expected to run to challenge the Republican nominee, who will more than likely be President Donald Trump.

An early convention will allow party wounds to heal after what's expected to be a contentious primary battle. It'll also give the nominee earlier access to general election funding they can't spend during the primary race.
