President Trump reportedly doesn't want to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un before this year's presidential election.

Talks have collapsed in recent months. And according to CNN, officials on the Trump campaign say they don't believe relations between the U.S. and North Korea are crucial to the president's reelection strategy.

President Trump and Kim's relationship has been an interesting one to watch. Last year, President Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to set foot in North Korea, and in 2018, despite some public feuding in the past, the two signed a "Declaration of Friendship."

However, after failing to meet a deadline for denuclearization talks, it seems neither the U.S. nor North Korea has any intention of negotiating anytime soon. In a New Year's Day address, Kim said he would be "taking a new path" when it comes to U.S. relations.

According to a statement by Korean diplomat Kim Kye-gwan, North Korea felt "deceived" for "being caught in the dialogue with [the U.S] for over one year and a half."

And officials from President Trump's administration say "any potential benefits to be gained from reopening talks are greatly outweighed by the risks."
