Chipotle wants you back and is willing to give you a free burrito to smooth things over.
Chipotle shut its doors for four hours Monday for a companywide meeting about food safety. The meeting comes after several reports in the last few months of E. coli outbreaks stemming from the restaurant. Months later, no definitive source for the outbreaks has been discovered.
Chipotle live-tweeted the meeting, with company execs giving employees health and safety tips.
The outbreaks severely impacted Chipotle's sales, and closing its 1,900 stores during peak lunch hours for a day doesn't help.
In an effort to win customers back, Chipotle offered a "rain check" for a free burrito. Customers could send a text to claim the offer.
The promotion was a hit on social media — it's an opportunity for free food, after all — but will the promotion help bring customers back?
Competitors like Moe's Southwest Grill sure hope not, and they're pouncing at the opportunity to snag some extra sales.
