Turkish officials say at least nine people were killed in a train collision in the capital city of Ankara.

The incident took place Thursday morning local time. Multiple reports say a high-speed train carrying more than 200 passengers collided with a railway engine that was was stopped at a station to check the tracks.

Officials said the collision caused a couple of the train's cars to derail and smash into the support beams for the station's pedestrian overpass. It then collapsed on top of the train.

Turkey's transport minister told reporters that three of the nine people who died were train drivers. Dozens of others were injured, several of whom are reportedly in critical condition.

Prosecutors are investigating the cause of the crash and three state railway agency employees have reportedly already been detained in connection to it.
