Syrian state TV and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights say thousands of people escaped Eastern Ghouta on Thursday.

Estimates of the exact number vary, but as many as 12,500 people abandoned their homes. They were reportedly headed toward government-controlled parts of Damascus. In footage from state TV, some people are in vehicles and others are walking with their belongings.

CNN reports the mass exodus came as Syrian forces advanced on rebels in parts of Eastern Ghouta.

This is reportedly one of the largest exoduses in a single day during the Syrian civil war.
