Samantha CrookApple announced it's adding a potentially life-saving update to the next version of iOS — the option to become an organ donor.
"My name is Gavin, and I've been waiting for a heart for seven years," a boy said in a Donate Life America pubic service announcement.
Apple partnered with Donate Life America to integrate organ donor registration into Apple's Health app. It'll be a revision to the Medical ID feature that comes standard in the app.
The Medical ID is a place where you can save information, like your blood type and allergies, that first responders can use in case of an emergency. In fact, it already has a slot to answer "yes" or "no" as to whether you're an organ donor. But Apple says the upcoming change will give iOS 10 users the option to register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor directly in the app.
Donate Life America says "95% of Americans are in favor of being a donor but only 52% are registered." Around 120,000 people are in need of an organ transplant.
iOS 10 will be available in a software update this fall.
