Award winning artist, pop culture icon and now ambassador to an entire Island; Barbados appointed Rihanna as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Thursday.

The island country is Rihanna's birthplace. In 2008, she was given the title of Barbados' Cultural Ambassador. And in 2012, she donated nearly $2 million to a hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Barbados' prime minister says it's that patriotism and philanthropy that earned Rihanna the new job.

In a press release, Prime Minister Mia Mottley says it's "fitting that we engage and empower her to play a more definitive role as we work to transform Barbados."

Rihanna's title means she's tasked with promoting "education, tourism and investment for the island."

Rihanna says she's excited to take on the responsibility and work with Mottley.
