Stoic Kawhi Leonard Wins His Second Consecutive NBA Defensive Player Of The Year Award

April 18, 2016

Kawhi Leonard has just won an award. He's thrilled.

The NBA honored the San Antonio Spurs small forward with the 2015-16 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award on Monday. This is Leonard's second consecutive year winning the award.

Every year, a panel of sports writers and broadcasters in the U.S. and Canada vote for the league's best defender. Leonard beat out Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green and Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside; they finished second and third, respectively.

The award has only been around since the 1982-1983 season, and Leonard has joined the short list of players to win the award in consecutive years. Here are a few of his other accolades:

- First non-center to win the award consecutive years since Dennis Rodman in '89-'90 and '90-'91

- Second player in NBA history to win multiple DPOY awards and Finals MVP (the other being Hakeem Olajuwon)

Third player under 6'7" to win multiple DPOY award

There's probably a better chance of Leonard earning another DPOY in his career than of him cracking a full smile.
