John Oliver Eviscerates (Tax-Exempt) Televangelists, Creates His Own Church

August 17, 2015

In response to (tax-exempt) televangelists who pull in millions of dollars in donations, John Oliver of "Last Week Tonight" has created his own church, Our Lady Of Perpetual Exemption. The church's mission statement is this:

"When John Oliver found out that Robert Tilton, Kenneth Copeland and other pastors of their ilk have been taking advantage of the open-ended IRS definition of 'church' and procuring a litany of tax breaks, he founded the Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption Church, a tax-exempt organization you certainly can't say is not a church. From that day forward, he has been dedicated to collecting copious donations and all manner of divine blessings, but mainly the donations."

He even brought his "wife" Sister Wanda Jo Oliver (played by "SNL" alum Rachel Dratch) to help solicit "donations" from the audience.

“If you do this, and this is real," Oliver said, "great things will happen to you, and that’s apparently something I’m allowed to say!”
