These Parents Were Charged $39.95 Just To Hold Their Newborn Baby In The Hospital

Having a baby is expensive — that's no surprise to any new parents.

But one couple was surprised to see an extra line on their hospital bill that appears to charge them nearly $40 just to hold their own baby.

New dad and Reddit user halfthrottle posted an image of the hospital bill on Monday, writing, "I had to pay $39.95 to hold my baby after he was born." The image shows a $39.95 charge for "skin to skin after c sec."

"During the C-section the nurse asked my wife if she would like to do skin to skin after the baby was born. Which of course anyone would say yes to. We just noticed it in the bill today," he wrote in a comment on his original post.

I had to pay $39.35 to hold my baby after he was born.

Commenters quickly began sharing their stories of overpriced or odd medical bills, with one commenter saying they were charged $99 to have their pulse checked after an injury. Another wrote about being charged $40 by a dentist for a reminder to floss and brush their teeth. And plenty of people were just appalled at the overall cost of having a baby in the United States. (It's pretty steep).

However, Reddit user FiftySixer attempted to explain the charge: "As a labor and delivery nurse, I can kind of explain this. I didn't know that hospitals charged for it, but doing 'skin to skin' in the operating room requires an additional staff member to be present just to watch the baby. We used to take all babies to the nursery once the NICU team made sure everything was okay. 'Skin to skin' in the OR is a relatively new thing and requires a second Labor and Delivery RN to come in to the OR and make sure the baby is safe."

But that explanation's not stopping the internet's outrage. You can read the full Reddit thread and its comments here.
