This Woman Got Her Employer To Kick Its High Heel Requirement To The Curb
May 12, 2016
A British woman started an online petition against requiring women to wear high heels at work — and the pressure worked.
I got sent home from work for wearing flats. It's still legal for employers to require women to wear heels..pls sign https://t.co/2VxzAQhdoC— Nicola Thorp (@MissNicolaSian) May 10, 2016
Nicola Thorp was hired by Portico employment agency for a receptionist position with PwC in London but was sent home on her first day for refusing to wear high heels.
"They said, you know, if you want to go out now and buy a pair of heels, then we're happy for you to do that — with my own money. And I refused on principle."
As of Thursday, her petition had more than 110,000 signatures, and Portico's managing director announced a change in its dress code policy to allow flat shoes.
