The First Trailer For 'The Birth Of A Nation' Is Here, And It's Epic

April 15, 2016

We're finally getting our first good look at Nate Parker's "The Birth of a Nation," which wowed audiences at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in January.

The movie is a period drama about Nat Turner, the black slave who led a 48-hour rebellion against his master in 1831. Judging by trailer, the showdown between slaves and their masters will likely be one of the most intense scenes in the film.

In the trailer, we hear Nina Simone's rendition of "Strange Fruit," which is eerily appropriate considering the context. That song is paired with dramatic images, like the shot of a little white girl holding a leash attached to the neck of a little black girl.

According to Deadline, people at the film's showing at Sundance were "crying in their seats and jumping to their feet in a prolonged standing ovation."

"The Birth of a Nation" hits theaters Oct. 7.
