Actress Zoe Saldana trades in her blue makeup and tail-- for a gun and some butt kicking in her latest role-- in Colombiana.

“We wouldn’t want to mess with her either. A new movie Colombiana, actress Zoe Saldana plays Catelya a young girl who becomes an assassin to seek revenge after witnessing the death of her parents.”

Colombiana didn’t make it to the top of the box office in its opening weekend-- but that may just be an effect of Hurricane Irene.
A writer for The New York Times says...

“Three new releases with dim box-office prospects going into the weekend were additionally pummeled by Hurricane Irene, which shuttered theaters in the all-important East Coast movie market.”

The flick about a women kicking bad guys’ around has some critics are making a comparison between Saldana and Angelina Jolie’s role in ‘Salt’ --- which makes Saldana a bit nervous.
Fox News reports the lethal leading lady says....

“If I think about it in that fashion [then] yes (it’s scary,) I wouldn’t want to think about it in that way... But I have been inspired by amazing actresses that have taken amazing risks and opened amazing doors..”

Some movie critics are singing praises of Zoe Saldana as the lead-- Viviana Hurtado for Huffington Post believes the role is empowering.

"‘Casting’ women -- in film and real life -- in multi-dimensional roles does not only have the power to influence and eventually change debates on gender roles. A more accurate representation in the media also synchs better with reality since we are career women, moms, spouses, sisters, B-F-Fs, students, often times all at once.”

However, Boston Globe staffer Wesley Morris is calling the movie another “blaxploitation” film.

“It’s basically a blaxploitation movie stretched to meaninglessly international proportions that leans on tired Colombian stereotypes. But if Saldana’s aiming to be some kind of new Pam Grier, she needs to save more than herself.
