Tell me you saw the game last night. What? Cardinals, Rangers? No, no- the real action was in Tucson.
Ok, so it was a 1-5 Arizona and a 3-3 UCLA. Mike Stoops had just been fired as Wildcats coach, and there was a baseball game on or something. But with four seconds left in the first half, things got interesting.
“With four seconds left in the first half, UCLA tries to run a play and it’s whistled dead for a time out. The official goes to make the announcement...” (Video source: ESPN)
Does he? Look again.
That, is not a proper uniform for a ref. Probably because he’s not a ref. Watch where he comes from. Not the sideline, but from behind the bench on to the field.
The fake ref actually got the ball tossed to him before the back judge noticed he was an imposter. He then began to strip, and took off running. The reason you don’t see that here is because....
“All of a sudden a fight breaks out between the two teams. UCLA Wide receiver Taylor Embree throws a punch at Arizona corner back Shaquille Richardson.”
The fight cleared both sidelines and took minutes to put down.
So interim coach Tim Kish had an interesting first day at work. Both Embree and Richardson were suspended, and Arizona won the game 48-12. The LA Times offers an... in-depth look into UCLA’s performance.
“Let’s hit the local team’s high points first:
Tyler Gonzalez, the former soccer manager, made a field goal.
Cool for him.
And ... um ... UCLA was outscored in the second half only 6-5 and won the fourth quarter, 5-3.
Sorry, it’s the best we can do.”
While Arizona’s new coach had fun on the field, The Washington Post wonders if the Bruins’ Rick Neuheisel could be transitioning to the parking lot.
“The Bruins ... couldn’t withstand the emotion of a team playing under a new coach and may have put theirs in jeopardy with a lackluster effort. On the hot seat before the season started, Rick Neuheisel may have taken big blow with a loss that puts a serious dent in UCLA’s bowl chances.”
Speaking of big blows, the streaking ref got down to his underwear before security crushed him on the goal line.
