You might not be able to tune into a wrestling match during the 2020 Summer Olympics. The International Olympic Council announced Tuesday it plans to drop wrestling from the lineup to make room for a new sport.

The final decision will be made when the IOC meets in Buenos Aires in September. However, the plan is not meeting a warm response. A British wrestling spokesperson told the BBC...

"The news from the IOC is extremely disappointing...as it is an extremely popular sport around the world.”

But wrestling wasn’t the only sport to be considered for the 2020 chopping block.

Fox News points out that modern pentathlon was also under close consideration, but the sport’s governing body was able to secure a spot since it “has been lobbying hard to protect its Olympic status.”

And, this technique may have caught on in the wrestling community.

The Telegraph reports Sport England is now planning to fund the sport £850,000 over four years in an effort “to build its grass roots support.”

The only time wrestling was not an Olympic event was during the 1900 Summer Olympic games in Paris. The sport will still be featured in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games.
