The oldest person in the world has passed away- just weeks before her 115th birthday.
Brazilian Maria Gomes Valentim was given the title of World’s Oldest Person by the Guinness World Records.
“Maria Gomes Valentim of Brazil was114 years old. She lived her entire life in the same city in Southeastern Brazil. She credited her long life to a healthy diet. It included coffee, fruit and an occasional glass of wine. She was just weeks away from celebrating her 115th birthday. She reportedly died from pneumonia.”
When she died, Valentim was 114 years and 314 days old. The Huffington Post reports…
“On May 18, Guinness determined that Valentim was 48 days older than the person previously considered the world’s oldest human, Besse Cooper of Monroe, Georgia. Guinness verified that Valentim was born July 9, 1896, in Carangola, where she lived all her life.”
However – there’s a chance Valentim may not have actually held the record. NY Daily News explains…
“Another Brazilian woman, is claiming to be the world’s oldest. Sebastiana de Lourdes Silva, who claims to be 116, says she’s the oldest. The Guinness Book has not had a request to verify her documents, the company said.”
CNN reports -- Valentim lived her life in southeast Brazil with her husband, Joao
“Valentim married Joao Valentim in 1913 and was widowed in 1946. They had one son together, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren...”
Valentim will be buried in her hometown cemetery in Carangola, Brazil.
