Manhattan mother of two Marion Hedges remains unconscious after she was hit in the head with a shopping cart.
WNYW gives us the background.
“On Sunday, the working mom was at the East Harlem Mall buying Halloween candy for underprivileged children. Police sources say two 12-year-old boys dropped a shopping cart from four stories above her, landing right on her head and nearly killing her.”
Police identified one of the 12-year-olds as Jeovanni R. One of the boy’s neighbors told the New York Daily News Jeovanni is trouble.
“He started going out all the time. Instead of being around the neighborhood he started going a couple blocks away, staying more in the streets, not listening, disrespecting adults.”
Authorities identified the other accomplice as Raymond Hernandez. Sources told the New York Post the two boys did not show any remorse.
“The pint-sized perps were smiling, telling jokes and laughing with each other after they were taken into custody.”
A Cosco employee at the scene says she expected more out of Target security -- arguing it ignored an earlier complaint about the same boys throwing slurpees onto mall shoppers.
Target security told the Cosco employee it doesn’t handle anything outside its doors. A spokesperson for the shopping plaza told DNAinfo he hadn’t heard any complaints.
"This is the first time I'm hearing that there were prior complaints, that these individuals are accused of throwing other things. This is a multi-million (dollar) facility that spends a lot of money on security.”
A writer for Gather says this is simply a case of wrong place, wrong time.
“All Mrs. Hedges did to deserve this was make a trip to Costco to buy candy for one of the six charities she works with. She has helped those less fortunate for 25 years. She doesn't deserve to be in a hospital.”
NBC says this accident is ironic.
“The victim of a horrible prank and the suspects are the same kids she was trying to reach.”
The two boys are charged as juveniles with assault and possession of a weapon.
