An Alaska woman punched a wild black bear right in his nose.
Why’d she do it? To save her dog, Fudge, from being eaten alive.
The New Republic spoke to 22-year-old Brooke Collins who says the bear was attacking her dachshund like it was a snack.
“'It had her kind of like when they eat salmon, Collins said Wednesday.’ ‘I was freaking out. I was screaming at it. My dog was screaming. I ran up to it...punched it right in the snout and it let go.”’
Collins said the bear was holding Fudge with its paws and biting the back of the dog’s neck. Talk show hosts on WXIX say they can’t imagine taking on a bear.
“She said she didn’t even think about what she did until after the fact. Can you imagine? No. She said had she thought about it before, but she said she just reacted because she saw her little dog in the mouth of this bear and thought...the bear was making dessert out of Fudge the dog.”
Luckily Fudge did not end up being doggy dessert. Collins told the Juneau Empire the experience with the bear shook her up and, needless to say, she does not plan on fighting more bears anytime soon.
‘“It was a stupid thing but I couldn’t help it, she said. I know you’re not supposed to do that but I didn’t want my dog to be killed.”’
Surprisingly, Collins and Fudge suffered only minor claw and bite marks. Collins decided the injuries were not severe enough to take her furry friend to the vet.
