New York State Police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old woman in connection to the fatal shooting of two volunteer firefighters on Christmas Eve. CNN has the details.

“Authorities traced the serial numbers of two guns found at the scene to Dawn Nguyen, who is now in federal custody.”

State and federal authorities are accusing Nguyen of purchasing weapons for 62-year-old William Spengler, who took his own life after allegedly setting fire to his house and using an AR-15 rifle to shoot volunteer firefighters working to control blaze. As a convicted felon, Spengler was banned from owning or purchasing firearms.

According to WSYR, Nguyen could spend the next 10 years in prison if she is found guilty of providing the firearms her former neighbor used to ambush the firefighters.

“Police say a note left behind by Spengler led them to Nyugen, but she claims the guns were stolen from her.”

USA Today reports Nguyen has been charged with “offering a false instrument for filing,” and for lying about the alleged purchase of a semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle — the same type of weapon used in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Nguyen has been accused of purchasing the “ … Bushmaster rifle, equipped with a combat-style flash suppressor, and the .12-gauge Mossberg shotgun … ” Spengler used in the “slayings of two first responders and the wounding of three others. U.S. Attorney William Hochul Jr. said … that Nguyen bought the guns on June 6, 2010, from a Gander Mountain store in Henrietta, south of Rochester.”

Nguyen’s lawyer claims she purchased the weapons legally and that they were then stolen from her vehicle, but that she doesn’t recall whether or not she reported the theft to local authorities.
