A victory for Wisconsin Republicans. More than nine hours of debate yielded the passage of Governor Scott Walker’s budget in the state senate.  Republicans are calling the budget historic, noting that it solves a $3 billion deficit without raising taxes.

Fitzgerald: “The claw back on collective bargaining ultimately puts in place the most honest and responsible budget we’ve seen here in a decade.” (WISN-TV)

But state Democrats are calling the $66 billion plan -- which gives tax breaks to corporations and investors, while cutting funding for public schools and programs benefiting the poor -- an assault on the middle class.

Larson: “This budget is about broken promises. They raised taxes on the poorest in our community. They raided segregated funds. And they did it as hypocrites. They said they weren’t going to do it, but that’s exactly what they did.”

The budget comes just days after the state supreme court reversed a hold on a law that takes away collective bargaining rights for public workers prompting Wisconsin citizens to – once again – rally at the state capitol. The Capital Times reports

“By 6:45 p.m., a circle of union supporters and hundreds of others opposed to the budget because of its proposed cuts to education and Medicaid, had formed around the Capitol. Chants of ‘Hey, hey, ho, ho! Scott Walker's got to go,’ rang out inside the Capitol … An hour later, most were gone.”

So, is hope lost for Wisconsin democrats? Not necessarily – voters successfully petitioned to recall nine senators for special elections in August, 6 republicans, and 3 democrats. PBS says, this is a pretty unique situation.

“This has only happened 20 times, where state lawmakers have actually had to face a recall election ... It’s really unprecedented in this country’s history, to have that many state-elected officials being recalled, and asking their voters once again for their support.”

Governor Walker is expected to sign the budget in the next few days.
