Six Republican state lawmakers could have lost their jobs Tuesday in a recall election in Wisconsin.
Fox News anchor: “This is a gigantic win for the Republican party .”
MSNBC contributor: “It’s a big loss for Democrats in Wisconsin.:
CNN reporter: “This was a clear loss here .”
Those six GOP lawmakers faced recall after siding with Governor Scott Walker on his controversial budget repair bill many considered anti-union.
The Democrats needed to win three of those six races to wrest control from Republicans. They fell short-- winning two battles but losing the war.
So what storyline did the media pick up on?
American Thinker says “Wisconsin GOP prevails”
But it’s “Working Families Win 2 of 6” on the AFL-CIO blog.
And while the American Prospect calls it... a washout.
The Greensboro News & Record calls the GOP victory “hanging on”
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough gives Republicans the W on this one. But- he adds--the GOP had some circumstantial advantages.
Joe Scarborough (MSNBC): “The timing could not have been worse for Democrats with the Dow collapsing, with President Obama suffering some of his lowest ratings ... Forget about whether it was the right thing decision what they did or not, the timing for Walker couldn’t have been better .”
But Democrats are trying to find a view where the glass looks half full. CNN’s Ted Rowlands reports.
Ted Rowlands (CNN): “They said they definitely sent a clear message that other states shouldn't think about messing with labor basically, because this could happen to you. Your job could be on the line. ”
Before the recall vote even happened-- The New York Times’ Nate Silver pointed out--
“Mr. Walker carried the six districts on Tuesday’s recall ballot by an average of 13 percentage points in 2010 — better than his statewide margin of 6 percentage points. If Democrats were to split the vote across these districts about evenly, that would be a reasonably troubling sign for Mr. Walker, however many of the seats Democrats actually win. "
Several of the recall races were close. Fox News’ Peter Johnson says-- this could be a sign of things to come.
Peter Johnson Jr. (Fox News): “More then $30 million has been poured into these races in this state and a lot of political observers were seeing this as sort of a surrogate race for the 2012 presidential in terms of what people are really thinking. ”
Wisconsin Democrats have been planning a recall election for Governor Scott Walker. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel-- that plan is still on.
