There’s a new blonde bombshell on the big screen, and she looks a little like someone from the past. Entertainment Tonight explains.
Anchor: “Well now the Marilyn Monroe Romance you never knew about. Only we can show you Michelle Williams as the legendary sex symbol when she gave one young man a week he would never forget.”
Trailer: “Gentlemen it is my special pleasure to introduce a woman who clearly needs no introduction.”
My week with Marilyn details a week in Monroe’s life while she was filming for Lawrence Oliver’s The Prince and the Showgirl in London. But does Michelle fit the role?
Based on Williams’ photo shoot for Vogue’s October edition-- CelebTV says-- she certainly looks the part.
“The blonde hair. The old Hollywood glamour. That dress … We have to admit that both casual and high fashion drama, Michelle looks eerily like the legendary sex symbol she is about to portray on the big screen in My Week with Marilyn.”
Makeup and some hip pads make the slender Williams look like the bodacious star from yesteryear-- but does she bring the bubbly actress to life?
Critics are torn. Williams was generating Oscar buzz when she was cast for the part-- and after seeing the trailer, Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton says he still thinks she’s the right girl for the part.
“Rather than choosing an actress with a public (and sometimes disturbing) obsession with the late, great Marilyn Monroe for this movie, The Weinstein Company picked Michelle Williams for the iconic part - and they should never regret that decision.”
But one LATimes blogger wonders-- can Williams do the part justice?
“… those eager to size up Williams' Monroe turn may be disappointed. While we see the actress dolled up in full Monroe garb...we don't hear much of the actress emulating the icon's famously breathy voice.”
A Slate blogger looked at the trailer and had a different thought-- suggesting moviegoers may not have a problem with Williams’ performance, but with the plot of the film.
“The schmaltzy, goldenrod tone of the trailer...makes me worry that this might be a case of a fine performance in spite of a lackluster context.”
The drama will hit the big screen on October 9th at the New York Film Festival and will be released everywhere else in November.
