And then there were three.
Reports say-- Sprint will join AT&T and Verizon, offering the iPhone 5 next month. But according to Bloomberg-- there’s one thing that will make Sprint standout.
“Sprint’s Nextel Corp. (S) will offer Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone next month with unlimited data service plans to distinguish itself from rivals AT&T Inc. (T) and Verizon Wireless, according to people familiar with the matter.”
Bloomberg received the news from sources quote- ‘familiar with the matter.’ For now, Sprint and Apple reps aren’t commenting. AT&T and Verizon used to offer unlimited data plans but switched to tiered plans in recent months -- making Sprint the only major service provider set to offer unlimited data plans.
But how long will it last? PC World says...
“…it is very likely that Sprint will use the lure of unlimited data to attract iPhone 5 customers away from its rivals, but it will eventually adopt the tiered and capped data plans used by AT&T and Verizon once the initial iPhone 5 rush subsides.”
The article goes on to say…
“Why are unlimited plans overrated? Have you ever gone to an all-you-can-eat buffet? All you can eat sounds awesome, but you end up paying twice as much for mediocre food and can’t actually consume enough to get your money’s worth.”
Sprint already offers unlimited data plans for other smartphones such as RIM’s Blackberry and HTC’s Evo. Product-Reviews says offering the new data plan with the iPhone 5 could bring Sprint out from its recent slump.
“The carrier has struggled of late to compete with its rivals and has made losses for the last fifteen quarters. Analyst at Avian Securities LLC, Matthew Thornton, said “It’s a competitive disadvantage if your two larger competitors have the iPhone and you don’t.””
