The NBA preseason is supposed to start October 9, but you can’t have a preseason without a regular season.
League and union officials met Wednesday, hoping to come closer to an agreement.
ESPN analyst Chris Broussard gives perspective to the meeting despite the 2-month lockout.
“Neither side entering the meeting expecting major movement. They don’t expect either side to make a proposal or a significant concession. But they feel like they kind of turned over a new leaf last week because both sides had a more conciliatory tone toward one another.”
Establishing goodwill could help the agreement come together. And while time is of the essence, the league believes there is enough time to get a deal done.
USA Today reports...
“The sides were far apart on economic issues and implementation of a hard salary cap, but NBA Commissioner David Stern has said there is time to reach a deal before postponement of training camps (set to open in early October) and cancellation of preseason games.”
With some of the league’s top players receiving lucrative offers from clubs overseas, others remain optimistic there will be a season...at some point.
The LA Times quotes NBA guard Steve Nash as saying...
"Hopefully, as we start to get into the time of year where everyone is missing basketball, we can start to concede on some points that each other are looking for and find a middle ground. That would be the best of both worlds."
But without an agreement, the concession will be the entire season.
