Over the past two months, political pundits have taken Rick Perry to task over his debate skills, or lack thereof. The latest person to share that viewpoint? Rick Perry. The Texas Governor spoke with Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday:
“When you take a look at the debates – I readily admit, I’m not the best debater in the world. With as many debates as we’ve got coming up, I may be a good debater when it’s all said and done… FLASH… I really like getting out and being able to talk to people, just like I’m talking to you today, where you have time to lay out your ideas.”
Perry has stated numerous times that he doesn’t think televised debates allow candidates enough time to answer questions. CNN’s Robert Simon says the Texas Governor may have a point:
“It's ridiculous that the responses are limited to 1 minute and 30 second followups... I mean, tell us your plans for future of the Middle East, you have one minute... That is totally media driven, because it's a good TV show. It's snappy.”
Debating may not be Perry’s strength, but The Huffington Post columnist Alan Schroeder says he better learn to be snappy if he wants the GOP nomination:
“The Perry campaign has to realize that in our electronic age the campaign trail pretty much begins and ends in front of the lens of a camera. Instead of turning his back on this reality, the candidate ought to buck up and put everything he's got into making himself a better debater.”
So if Perry could make himself a better debater, does he stand a chance in the primaries? The Fox News Sunday panel discuses his odds:
“The reason he was at the top of the polls when he got in was people were reacting to what they thought about Rick Perry, what they thought they knew... then they got a whole bunch of new information in the debates, because he didn't look too good. He didn't look ready for prime time… FLASH… What's in Rick Perry's favor is that Americans really like somebody who can show they can take a punch and get up off the mat. That's what he showed this morning.”
Finally, Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin says he’ll have to do more than just ‘get up off the mat’ if he wants to be a serious contender:
“You can run a quick campaign, if you are prepared to be president. But you can’t create someone of presidential stature in a few weeks or months... no staff in the world can make up for the defects that [Perry has] revealed, nor make him a genuinely likeable figure. Only he can correct those flaws.”
Rick Perry’s campaign has announced that the Texas Governor has committed to the next 5 Republican debates.
