Nintendo’s president has confirmed the next generation Wii U will launch in several countries before next Christmas. Here’s Chicago’s WLS.
“The new video game console the successor to the original Wii is seen as key to Nintendo’s efforts to start a new cycle of growth at a time when the strong yen is hurting its revenue and profit.”
MarketWatch notes, strong growth and profits have been hard to come by lately for the company.
“The Japanese video game giant swung to a net loss of [almost $630 million] for the nine months ended December and that it now expects a net loss of [a little less than $850 million] for the fiscal year ending March...”
The company is trying to learn a lesson from the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, after the company had to deal with intense scrutiny, investor pressure and the first fiscal year loss for the company in more than 25 years.
Nintendo’s president says “...The Wii U will come with new ways of playing that will almost make the term ‘home console’ obsolete. It will also offer mobile gaming. The machine has a touch-panel controller.”
But don’t expect to see the Wii U on store shelves any time soon. Nintendo isn’t expected to release the console until end of the year’s holiday shopping season.
MSNBC’s Ingame reports “not much else is known, including a final retail price, let alone Nintendo's selection of launch titles. But the fact that it's definitely coming out by year's end is a lot more to chew on when compared to the other guys.”
So will it be worth waiting outside in the cold for the Wii U?
With new features like a new controller, high definition graphics, new views and much more some say it is.
The Wall Street Journal reports at a briefing for analysts in Tokyo, Nintendo President said the company will show the finalized model of the Wii U at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in June in Los Angeles.
