The White House announced Sunday the U.S. will withhold aid to Pakistan to the tune of $800 million.
Chief of Staff Bill Daley told ABC - tension over the Osama Bin Laden raid is still a factor.
“Right now they’ve taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid we were giving to their military and we’re trying to work through that. ... Obviously there is still a lot of pain that the political system in Pakistan is feeling by virtue of the raid that we did to get Osama Bin Laden something the President felt strongly about and we have no regrets over, but the Pakistani relationship is difficult but it must be made to work.”
Daley was actually confirming what The New York Times reported before his appearance on ABC. The Times explains -- where that money was reportedly supposed to go.
“This aid includes about $300 million to reimburse Pakistan for some of the costs of deploying more than 100,000 soldiers along the Afghan border to combat terrorism, as well as hundreds of millions of dollars in training assistance and military hardware...”
Thus far, President Obama’s administration has invested heavily in its relationship with Pakistan -- and according to Fox News, it still intends to.
“This week president Obama said he thinks it’s important for America to keep giving lots of money to foreign countries like Pakistan even though we don’t have a whole lot of it to go around here at home, because if we don’t, it could start breeding terrorists or creating huge refugee flows. One more thing, the 800 million dollar payment we’re suspending will not effect non military aid.”
Daily Mail says - although the Osama bin Laden raid has been the most high profile point of contention -- more recent Pakistani action has led the US to, more or less punish the country. The Mail says the military funds were cut...
“In a move by the Obama administration to vent its displeasure at the expulsion of its military trainers from the country and limits Pakistan has put on handing out visas to U.S. personnel.”
And a writer for New Zealand’s Stuff.co says this lack of cooperation between the countries was a deal breaker for the aid. Stuff quotes the Pentagon as saying..
“We are taking a very clear-eyed approach to our relationship with Pakistan... Working together, allowing an appropriate presence for US military personnel, providing necessary visas, and affording appropriate access are among the things that would allow us to effectively provide assistance."
