The executive chairman from world’s largest Internet search provider is planning a business trip to a country with some of the strictest Internet laws — Google CEO Eric Schmidt will visit North Korea on what’s being called a “humanitarian mission.”

Sources report a delegation led by New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson will accompany Schmidt. Exactly what they’ll be doing is still unknown.

Speculation was immediately in high gear following this news, with some mentioning a possible meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

In his New Year’s Speech, many considered Un to make mention of a “revolution” of some sort, although he offered no specifics.

A writer for Examiner.com said the two will be discussing the modernization of North Korean schools, which would make sense in light of Un’s New Year’s speech.

Other sources like Mashable and SlashGear speculate that it’s far more likely the Schmidt and Richardson tandem will be discussing Internet policies and opening up the web to citizens.

Google has yet to confirm any details, but if Schmidt is jetsetting to the East Asian peninsula, it’ll be a first for any Google exec.
